This was hard to put down. Like many of the people fighting on the side of the South and the Constitution as it was originally intended, Thomas Berry was a fierce and dedicated fighter. And he relates his battles with two of the greatest Generals that war saw on either side. Looking at our wars today and the outstanding medical care our soldiers have available, then contrast it with the 1860's and it is hard to believe how anyone other than someone like Berry would have served. Thankfully there were many like him.
The south had a very difficult time competing with the money (Lincoln was the first one to produce "Fiat" money) and industrial strength and the Navy the north had, the main source of the weapons and supplies for the South had to come from the armies of the North. Berry served in the command of two of the best Southern Generals who were able to use the armies of the North as their own commissaries. Had it not been for the ability of these two to defeat much greater Northern Armies and seize their vast supplies of wagons, arms, and other supplies, the war probably would have ended much earlier.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a true first hand narrative of what "Lincoln's War" was really all about.

I have been through countless civil war books over the last decade, and this one is the most incredible diary I've read. The adventures this guy got into would make an epic Hollywood movie. I recommend this book highly and don't think you will be disappointed.
Just opened this to read and there was nothing there! Wish I didn't have to give a star to send this😁
The book provided a lot of primary information about John Hunt Morgan. There wasn't as much as I wanted about the Ohio raids but it gave good background.
I love anything about Forrest. I love reading first hand accounts from the men who served. I would recommend this book.
Good read if you don't mind the author telling you about the Civil War 60 years after the fact. I enjoyed the read even after 60 years because I enjoy imagining him sitting on the porch telling me his story. Several historical inaccuracies but 60 years will do that. It is a great way to know what he thought and felt about the war.
